In the early 90s there was was a beautiful collision of melody and noise that permeated the UK, Australian and New Zealand music scenes. Wistfully strummed Byrdsian guitars coexisted with spiralling psychedelic rock riffs while dreamy vocal melodies added to the heady optimism of the music. The days of Ride, The Stone Roses, The Charlatans, Swervedriver and numerous others captivated a generation of music fans and has continued to inspire and influence the musicians that emerged in the subsequent decades. In Australia there's a rich lineage of pop framed guitar psychedelia; from Even to The Clouds, The Go-Betweens to Underground Lovers. A new name to add to that list is Sydney group A Place in the Sky, the vehicle of songwriter and musician Gavin Angus-Leppan. If Gavin's name rings a bell it's because he's also one third of electronic group Telemetry Orchestra who released a trio of albums in the late 90s and into the 00's, and received national radio and TV airplay from triple j and Rage.
