Naarm/Melbourne based sound artists Ai Yamamoto and Dan West began collaborating together during 2020 in the breaks between lockdown and online. During this time they regularly improvised together and quickly developed an empathetic musical dialogue grounded in their love of melodic experimentation. Ai and Dan’s live set premiered in a sold out show at Melbourne Recital Centre in 2021. In 2022, the duo went on to support renowned Japanese composer Eiko Ishibashi, premiere a new music and video work for Darebin FUSE Festival, sell out their commissioned feature performance for Brunswick Music Festival 2023 at Little Cardigan Japanese bakery and played to a capacity crowd for their 2025 MPavilion Dusk till Dark performance. Together, their immersive audio visual performances are full of beautiful melodies, glitchy rhythms and ambient textures created from analogue synthesisers and real time processing of field recordings, piano, strings and guitar. Inspired by the sights and sounds they collect and create, Dan and Ai’s compositions are roadmaps for thematic audio visual experimentation in performance. The spaces in which Ai and Dan play live inform the way their live shows unfurl, resulting in a unique shared experience with the audience for that moment in time.
