Alanka doesn't keep a proper journal. She wonders who has that kind of time? Instead she keeps track of key moments in 3-minute bites of music, rhythm and rhyme, developing her own idiosyncratic soundtrack to life. Alanka has recently released her independent debut EP, Pieces, on Berzurka Records. Specialising in heartache of the unrequited variety, a little bit of socio-political activism and more than a dose of wistful nostalgia, Alanka's debut recording features the twenty-something angst it took her nearly thirty-something self to let go of. The singer-songwriter's semi-autobiographical piano-powered pop is tinged with folk, jazz, cabaret and musical theatre edges. Inspired by the songwriters that gave voice to a generation of baby boomers, Alanka's pop tracks are characterised by rich harmonies, lush string arrangements and a sweet-sounding vocal that belies the cutting edge of her lyricism.
