Alpen began when Andrew and Tony Marshall met, involved in one of the less reputable courses on option within the Humanities department of The University of Adelaide. It evolved into a three piece with the addition of Andrew's long-standing friend Lachlan Tanner, and they wiled away the Winter of 2006 inventing lengthy hard psych-jams purely for their own pleasure. Early the next year, Chris Bateman was brought in as vocalist and additional guitarist, further filling out and complimenting the powerful sounds they were producing, and giving the music a representative human voice. The lineup has remained steadfastly consistent since, and they have been gigging regularly in and around Adelaide at venues such as the Ed Castle, the Exeter Hotel, Producers Bar, The Jade Monkey, Rhino Room, The Crown & Anchor, and the Uni Bar.
