Guitarist, drummer and singer Anthony Talarico has been improvising at the Club Weld studio since 2014, and is one of the studio’s founding musicians. In that time he’s released a number of brilliant recordings, including the 2022 collaboration with Chris Stiles and Nicola Morton, ‘We Were Made For Loving You’. The ‘Angela’ EP (out April 17) is Talarico’s first solo release, and first with producer Annais Paris. It’s another loose net of conversations, affirmations and sly pop references. ‘Angela’ is an improvised pop song, evoking a hazy, nostalgic feeling analogous to Neil Young’s ‘Will To Love’ or even ‘Space Oddity’. Pasko Schravemade’s jazzy, Steely Dan-ish keys help advance Talarico’s expressive, open string guitar explosions, and touching lyrics about talking to his mother. ‘Last Night’ returns to some of the heavier atmospheres exposed on ‘We Were Made For Loving You’, and ‘Weeow Weeow’ is a beautiful carrier wave, fighting its way through static to find amplitude. The EP is dedicated to the noise of life, discovery and connection. Blue Mountains digital artist Naomi Oliver has also provided a beautiful visual accompaniment to ‘Angela’. She says: “The visuals for the clip are a mixture of footage I captured on DV tape in the early 2000s of a quiet, empty office space, combined with paper collage and animation. These playful visual elements, added to otherwise static shots and corporate-style aesthetics, were intended to echo the moments of warmth and colour I get from the track.” Club Weld is a non-therapy based studio for neurodiverse musicians based at ACE in Parramatta.
