Banbury Cross has been weaving harmonies and tracing melodies around the Yarra Ranges Victoria since 2019. ASA and Unisong award-winning singer/songwriter Cath Russell, instinctively seeks ways to draw constellations of people together musically - which is how Banbury Cross was born. Banbury Cross is an original vocal folk trio with added musical collaborators and instrumental textures. Cath, Alice Woodberry and Rachel Nendick combine vocal timbres. Cath’s songs are influenced by an exploration of exterior and interior landscapes and the women lean into styles from Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald to Tiddas. “Stepping Out” and “Sleeping Lands” were the two singles the band released in the first half of 2021, receiving airplay across dozens of community radio stations around Australia. Craig Cracknell from Hobart FM praised “vocals and songs that sit alongside Annie Lennox and Wendy Matthews”. Banbury Cross has played sold out shows at the Wesley Anne Northcote, Open Studio Northcote and Jimmy Hornets Richmond, sharing gigs with Julia Messenger, Katankin and Lucy’s Lockett. Recipient of a Shire of Yarra Ranges COVID arts relief grant to continue writing and recording throughout 2020, Banbury Cross worked long distance with patch-whizz David Carr at Rangemaster to produce recordings they made in gaps between lockdowns. Banbury Cross is releasing their new single, “Time and Tide”, November 19th 2021.
