Biedermeier is the alter ago and brainchild of Chen Lim, a music producer from Sydney, Australia. A Malaysian-born Chinese, Chen immigrated with his family when he was 14 to Perth in Western Australia. Three years later he hightailed it to Sydney to pursue an Arts degree at Macquarie University, an institution known mainly for its abundance of grassy knolls and glassy-eyed individuals who inhabit them. He started tinkering with techno (i.e. skipped like, a lot of lectures) during the heydays of the genre-bending musical melting pot of the mid-1990’s. As such, his nascent creations were shaped by influences from the rave scene, indie bands and even death metal. Yep, it's true. Just ask his poor little sister who had to put up with all that nihilistic, pagan-worshipping din in their modest middle-class home within Sydney's inner western suburbs.
