Bird Machine are Luke and Jenna Grbin, a pair of lovers from Geelong, Australia, and Hamilton, New Zealand. Combining distinct musical sensibilities, their current batch of songs reminisces on early 90s alt-rock and dreampop with inflections of folk, wrapped up in plush pop melodies. Their jointly penned lyrics, at once commentative and introspective, shimmer within layered vocals above a swirling tapestry of guitars, keys, and syncopated beats. Their songs are written, performed, recorded, and produced by the two in a little bedroom in the New Zealand suburbs. Both husband and wife gained an appreciation for music at a very young age. His parents’ CD collection was formative of Luke’s musical background. Before ever holding one, he was always fascinated with the guitar, and his first felt natural in his hands. Even as a child, music was transcendental and inspirational. Today, Luke records music and plays live to hopefully make others feel something too. Jenna was singing, songwriting, and performing regularly as a child. Since her teens, she has taken her voice around New Zealand on tour and celebrated her roots in a Māori kapa-haka (performing arts) group. She’s been writing songs that move people ever since. Today, the two challenge each other’s songwriting and compositional conventions to synthesize their distinct styles. With an array of written songs up their sleeves, the duo plan to release their debut EP or album in the summer of 2022/23. With their deft backing band behind them, Bird Machine will bring their live show to audiences in the second half of 2022. Social commentary is a big part of the pair's music. ‘Our Kind’, released 8th July 2022, is the band's latest alternative single, and stems from the duos desire for more awareness around the impact media algorithms can have on us, when they calculate what holds our attention the longest - removing diversity in our information diet. The track has already racked up over 16,000 views across platforms and broke into the Top 11 Radio one chart. A must-watch - their video for ‘Our Kind’ is a nostalgic trip back to the 90s - jam-packed full of the pair's own memories. Made by New Zealand filmmaker (and Jenna’s cousin) Anthony Butters, it depicts loss to the new media machine, a new spectrum of social vulnerability, and the bittersweetness of letting go and accepting the new reality. The video premiered on New Zealand National Television on Juice TV and was playlisted. Their next single release, "Moneyache", is set for release on 26th August 2022
