Hailing from the ‘Steel City’ of Newcastle NSW, Truscott grew up in a military family, moving from city to city throughout most of his early life. It was while living in Malaysia that he first picked up a guitar and started writing songs. Having grown up ‘on the run’ as he puts it – spending a year or two in a city before being posted to another with his family – finding a sense of belonging was tricky as a young person. Music became his solid ground, a place to tell stories and a safe space to find meaning. A true home. When he talks about songwriting, Pat says he learnt the art from the best by listening to his parents’ and grandparents’ cd collections that included everyone from James Taylor to Jeff Buckly, Johnny Cash to the Bee Gees. They all struck a chord with the young artist and allowed him to explore then define his own style. As a teenager he finally settled in Newcastle and amongst the drone of the port city, has called it home ever since. The moniker ChaiChester came from his peaceful memories made near Chichester Dam in the Hunter Valley.
