The lush string-laden repent of Don’t Pass Me By is the second release from Château, a follow up to the chiming guitar-driven rhythms of You Need Her. The duo combine to produce soaring harmonies on their sophomore single, the listener punched with heartfelt lament from outset to crescendo. “Feel something missing all this time/Reflections gather in my mind” begins the solemn monologue, before exploding into a chorus that brims with spirit and swells to a thrilling choral climax. Coming in at a concise three minutes, Don’t Pass Me By is all the more rousing for its brevity. As with their debut effort, Château have placed enduring melody on a pedestal. Channelling vocal groups such as The Everly Brothers and The Bee Gees into a distinct entity, the result is a classic cadence that belongs very much in the here and now. Don’t Pass Me By is at once instantly recognisable and startlingly fresh. It is music stripped of self-indulgence. It is essential listening.
