Naturally shy in person, Chess comes into her own when she sings. Most at home on stage, she has been performing since an early age, and began to take music seriously in her late teens, completing a degree in jazz studies at ANU. It is there she found an affinity for blues and soul music, and found her ‘sound’. Influenced by the likes of Ray Charles, Eva Cassidy, Katie Noonan and Aretha Franklin, she recently penned her first EP entitled ‘Take One’. A gifted writer, her sharp, autobiographical lyrics resonate with her audience, capturing the mood of young women today. Steering clear of the all too familiar topics such as ‘grinding on the dance floor’, Chess’s writing is deeply personal and communicates a strong and important message.
