Chris Smith is an Australian guitarist and songwriter, who has been operating in and around the Melbourne indie rock and experimental/ noise scenes since the mid ‘90s. Playing in bands like The Golden Lifestyle Band and Substatic (with Peter Jefferies- ex This Kind of Punishment, Nocturnal Projections etc), he is better known for his solo guitar work, largely instrumental and experimental in nature. He has released 3 solo albums: Cabin Fever (1998) Replacement (2000) and Bad Orchestra in 2007, as well as a compilation of early work, singles & EPs Map Ends (2002) and an Eponymous collaboration with Justin Fuller (Zond) in 2006. 2007’s Bad Orchestra, later reissued to much wider acclaim on Ben Chasny’s Hermit Hut label in 2014, was somewhat of a departure, incorporating more traditional song structures. 2020 will see Chris release his 4th solo album and the long-awaited follow up to the critically acclaimed Bad Orchestra; Second Hand Smoke, an extraordinary album of introspective ballads, torn up blues and hallucinatory instrumentals, through Melbourne Indie imprint It Records (Primitive Calculators, New War, Ned Collette).
