Christine Pan is a Sydney-based composer and producer known for her versatility in style and malleability in form. She has composed music for many spaces, ranging from theatre and science conferences to film and orchestras, often with a strong feeling of musical dramaturgy and demonstrates a poetic rawness. Inspired by her experiences growing up in an inter-cultural space, she intertwines Australian and Asian musical aesthetics. Her sound can be described as an “oasis for the soul” and “sense of returning to home” by her listeners. Pan has worked with Musica Viva, ABC Classic and Jazz, Western Australian Symphony Orchestra, Vivid Sydney and other major Australian and International arts organisations. Pan graduated with first-class Honours with A Bachelor of Music in Composition from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in April. Pan’s first single ‘Time Capsule’ is created as an audio-visual project with Australian-Filipinx animator Bea Brabante. The track is a study if the current self and the inner child, the difficulties of surviving in an inter-cultural space and all the societal and familial struggles that come with being a first gen Australian-Asian. Blending the bel canto and Chinese opera techniques, Pan layers immersive vocal harmonies with beats sampled from the shuffling of Mahjong tiles. Pan operates in many inter-disciplinary including health, working as a composer for Liverpool Hospital palliative care patients. Interested in multi-sensory concert experiences, she has also curated her own concert Spill The Tea, a series of solo chamber works inspired and paired with five different types of tea. The series has since developed into Tea Break, series of Concerts in Moana Hall, WA in collaboration with Tenth Muse Initiative for Fringe World 2022. She is also on composer residency for Filipinx play, Salt Baby and Chinese myth and legends inspired play, Moon Rabbit Rising, both scheduled to showcase from May to early July. With a mission to tell powerful stories through music, Pan worked with Orchestra Victoria to create a musical adaptation of Introducing Teddy, Jessica Walton's children's picture book, as part of Midsumma Festival, advocating for transgender rights in educational spaces. Alongside writing for music, Pan is the pianist in her piano quintet, Somnus Quintet, where they often perform at international gaming conventions and private functions.
