Singer/songwriter Joseph Mackey came together with bassist Dylan Noble, lead guitarist Timothy Chivers and drummer Matthew Meehan-Lam to form indie/folk alternative-rock outfit Coconut Shy in Naarm/Melbourne in 2025. Beginning as a solo project, the act was primarily a one-man-show in its early years as Mackey surfed a Naarm live music scene just beginning to find its feet post-covid. By 2024, Mackey had decided to bring the gazillion songs written in his bedroom to life with a full-fledged four-piece – and that’s exactly what he found. There’s soft acoustic finger-picking, heavier strumming, introspective lyrics and catchy choruses. It’s music made for people who love a singalong around a campfire, a soundtrack for the drive to the party, a road-trip to the beach or an afternoon indoors on a rainy day. It’s giving the guitar a hug instead of smashing it on the stage floor.
