The Sportsmetal band Codex began in 2002 with a much different line-up than what is currently present. Codex was formed from the remains of Ballarat based metal band Rake and was originally called Flying Colors. Founding member Apauln was joined by Rake guitarist Jamie Armstrong on lead guitar, Drummer Glen Panke(who also played with Apauln in Ballarat band Wishbone) and Natalie Polson on Vocals. The band stayed this way till early 2004 when they were joined by local fusion/rock bass player Alex Jovanovic. Now the original line-up was complete but in mid 2004 Glen and Natalie left. What followed was a long auditioning process and many drummers and vocalists were auditioned. By late 2004 Cam and Jin Walker were selected as new drummer and Vocalist and the band name was changed to Malicious Restraint. The rehearsal process went on for a while, working on getting everything right and experimenting with new songs till Jamie had to leave the band in early 2005. Now the band was in need
