Cole (guitar) and Van Dijk (fiddle) combine their flamboyant disregard of traditional folk structures with a supernatural complicité to construct a riveting and rickety platform on which to build Australia’s New Tradition. Setting their musical compass by the dance music of Western Europe in general and Great Britain in particular, their original melodic constructions reference the badlands of the trad landscape, but their arrangements incorporate harmonic and rhythmic structures more commonly associated with contemporary extrapolations heard within the concert hall. This is the unexpected resurrection and re-creation of Australia’s mongrel traditions, left for dead but secretly blooming in the sub-tropics.
