contra
Bio history
As a DJ and producer, Contra draws inspiration from a wide variety of new and old electronic music genres, ranging anywhere from classic 90s breakbeat to modern progressive house. With an ear for unique sounds and a passion for blending different styles, Contra's music reflects his diverse influences and eclectic tastes. Raised on a steady diet of Australian electronic music, Contra began experimenting with production at a young age. He held a DJ residency at the Starfvckers Club for many years, a premier destination for electronic music fans in the early days of Sydney nightlife. He also played in clubs like Chinese Laundry, World Bar, and Candy's, where many of Sydney's most talented artists graced the stage in the early stages of their careers. These experiences helped shape Contra's own musical style and knowledge.
Drawn together from a miscellaneous musicians ad, mates since school on guitars met cousins on rhythm. Three months later their first ep ‘on a quiet day you can hear it breathing’ was recorded in a single 8-hour session. All the same age, they grew up listening to a variety of independent music, obsessed with indie rock as it evolved from My Bloody Valentine to Sonic Youth, listening to anything from Ride, Dinosaur Jr, Swervedriver, Teenage Fanclub, Trans Am, Mogwai, and Underground Lovers through to Engine Kid, Kyuss, Poster Children, Melvins, and Dead Kennedys.
