The Cousin Betty origin story is as long and multifaceted as their sound, but allowing for individual tastes and pigeon-holing convenience, we’d generally suggest that they’re a ROCK band and so maybe we can also boil down their journey to this stage in far fewer words; lets try. Cousin Betty, named after an old English slur, was the brain child of Damien Stofka –Guitarist/Riff-Physician and Captain. After years of writing and using a variety of personnel to record his works, he settled on singer, Frontman and best example of a missing primal link between the modern Homosapien and the derivatives prior -Matt Downey to represent the band. Moving from a Desert Sessions/Garage sound to a boarder POPtastic multi-genre, Matt started pulling together a line up best suited to the challenge. Andi Dyson had been a longtime friend and an undisputedly brilliant skin-whacker for some of Sydney’s most enduring bands, she was the lightbulb moment that first registered as the most likely to tackle drums beyond drums. Spending years, herself refining her style from the limits of genres, had one listen to the music and immediately suggested Tara Doyle –Bassist, Writer, Pitch-Perfect angel-voiced -powerhouse but first they had to break it to Astrid Carr who’d also been headhunted by Downey for the Bass. “Too easy” said Astrid, producing the Flying Vee she’d secreted in her Steam Punk shoe, while kicking the top off a longneck with the other, “I’d prefer to shred like a Muther Fucker anyhow” AND SHE COULD! Momentarily buoyed by the insincere enthusiasm of a record label, they managed to produce several singles that each enjoyed critical international reviews, airplay and attention. Upon honouring the terms of their contract they were more determined than ever to continue producing solid songs with little interest in consistency of style. Assembled, in the phoenix of a post-pandemic landscape; autonomous, hungry, focused and more united than previous incarnations, they find themselves poised to release their proudest produce without restriction.
