Cowboy” Robert Lee has been critiquing local politicians and singing various other truths from the depths of the swamp for several decades now. The swamps being Meanjin, or Brisbane, a city built out of mangroves and marshes that swelters for nine months of the year. Bob, however, hails from far tougher and muggier climes, having grown up amongst the mango farms and pineapple plantations of Yeppoon in central Queensland. The hard drinking swagger of the north has never completely left The Cowboy —or his music— and it’s deeply embedded within the grooves of his latest release, Exotic Crimes. As complex as the man himself, it may seem a little menacing at first, but, once you get to know him, you’ll quickly realise that he’s alright. Exotic Crimes for not so exotic climes, this is the sound of warm nights in sweaty pubs, chilled only by cold beer and the occasional threat of a fight.
