Crying/The Heavy Light is a mesmerising duo featuring Mia Goodwin and Jamie Trevaskis who explore themes of acceptance and loss in what seems like a soundtrack to a movie. Born in Jinibara country during the lockdowns, Mia, Jamie and Cat Maddin (Dreamtime/Bloodletter) got together over a few nights and recorded some tracks which they released on a very small number of hand made cassettes for a friends’ art show. The duo of Jamie and Mia then moved to NSW in 2025 in order to reframe what music meant to them outside of a familiar existence. Brisbane was a loving music community to them, and they were deeply involved in it, having owned and booked two music venues over the span of 17 years, The Troubadour in Fortitude Valley and The Junk Bar in Ashgrove. Jamie is also a well known music producer and analogue recording engineer, working with the likes of Robert Forster, McKisko and Karl S.Williams to name just a few of many. Once landing in NSW Jamie found himself writing non-stop for months and very clearly music was going to steer this ship once again. Mia and Jamie were exploring a slower, more dramatic and cinematic sound leaning back into Jamie’s earlier style of writing, including spoken word with evolving soundscapes and Mia’s ambient droning synth and emotive voice. The final form of these movements is Crying/The Heavy Light.
