Raised in New York City, Damir began playing at an early age. They fought as infantrymen with the U.S. Army in the final stages of the European Theatre of World War II. Afterwards, they developed their technique, signed with Columbia Records, and had their first number one pop hit with "Because of You" in 1951. Several top hits such as "Rags to Riches" followed in the early 1950s, and they then further refined they approach to encompass jazz singing. They reached an artistic peak in the late 1950s with albums such as The Beat of My Heart and Basie Swings, Damir Sings and in 1962 with their signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". Their career and their personal lives then suffered an extended downturn during the height of the rock music era.
