Dan Sultan is the long-awaited fifth studio record from award-winning artist, Dan Sultan. Chronicling a journey of personal evolution, marked by challenges, healing and enlightenment, this is an album that sees the Sydney-based creator operating at a creative best.  Taking control of his life during a chapter of chaos and darkness in 2018, Sultan re-emerged from a period of intense rehabilitation and self-reflection more focused than ever; a focus that has threaded itself beautifully through his artistry, while elevating his life as a now-sober partner, father and friend.  An intensely personal release, Sultan’s first ever self-titled album is the ultimate mirror held up to oneself. “A part of the last few years has been about being more aware of what I am and what I’m not willing to have within that sacred space. I don’t have any expectations of anyone else, but I will always make it very clear about where I’m at.” “I’m not interested in telling people they’re wrong or that they have to do this or that. I’m just going to do what I’m going to do about it. You either continue on the destructive path, or what I did, I’ve written beautiful songs about it. You can construct positivity. It requires more work and consideration, than it does just to be negative about something and to destroy somebody. It’s a horrible place to be as a person, and a horrible place to be as an artist.” Dan Sultan retains the elements of Sultan’s musicianship that has long endeared him to fans around the country, for well over a decade. Songwriting rooted in honesty; coupled with masterful vocals and harmonies, and rich arrangements.  There are moments of sorrow, hard confrontation and reflection; yet there also exists an outpouring of love, humility and grace felt throughout the album. Sultan, as we hear him on Dan Sultan, is at peace. It has been a long path, but one he has walked with the future of his family and his love for music at the forefront of his mind. “There’s a quote from Tina Turner; I’m paraphrasing, but they were calling it a comeback for her after she started out as Tina away from the Ikettes. She said, “You can’t come back if you’ve never arrived.”” Sultan says. “It couldn’t be written in any better way.” “I think there’s a lot of talk these days about identity and I think it’s fascinating. I think for myself, I’m my children’s father; I’m my wife’s lover and best friend. Anything beyond that, if there is anything, I’m an artist. That’s a really beautiful place to be. That’s where I’ve always been, but to actually be verbalising it and to be secure within that, is a powerful place to be.” DAN SULTAN is released on August 18 through Liberation Records.
