Born in Gympie, Dave grew up in a religious household although his father was probably agnostic. Dave moved to Brisbane in 1967 where he soon rebelled, experimented with drugs and discovered rock music. He taught himself to play guitar and ended up playing bass in a little-known band called Pagan Syndrome. Following a bizarre acid trip, the band went religious and thus a long period of gospel music ensued writing gospel songs in a band called Barbeque Bob… From 1980 to 1984, family life took precedence over music. They moved to Victoria for six years, and despite stints at playing double bass and occasionally guitar, he was quite lost and feeling the pressures of study, work, family responsibilities and gradual loss of faith. In 1992, Dave took his family to London. Although there for about twelve years, it was in the last three of those that he took up playing and writing songs again.
