"So here's the thing, compare me to whoever you want. Really, I don't care. If it means someone takes the time to request a song on radio or buy a CD or play a track for a friend because they heard I sound like such-and-such, so be it. I don't care how I get heard, provided I get heard. There's a lot to say so we'd better get moving." Meet David Gillespie. A 20-something with a lot on his mind. David Gillespie is a singer-songwriter based in New York. Originally from Australia, he has called the city home for the past five years. Prior to arriving in New York he spent time in Melbourne, Toronto and Sydney, in addition to having spent his childhood in Hong Kong. The net result is a thoroughly mixed-up accent and a global point of view. His music meanwhile is the sum of many parts; raised on The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and The Doobie Brothers, he found his way through Springsteen and Prince to modern acts like War On Drugs and Gary Clark Jr. The focus regardless has been the songwriting craft: lyric and melody, conflict and (sometimes) resolution. When The Lights Go Out is the first single off the forthcoming EP, Heathen Revival.
