Dean is a stalwart of the Melbourne music scene: former bassist with hillbilly lounge musak practitioners Cousin Dad and their successors Cowboy X; occasional harmonica player for The Fish John West Reject; and a founding member of 90s folk rockers Wild Honey, pop cabaret act The Falling Sky, mother-nature-inspired folksters Echidna Love Train, and long-time indie rockers The Phosphenes. Dean hasn’t made a habit of solo performances; but with The Phosphenes heading straight from a lengthy hiatus into the recording studio, he has recently thrown himself into a string of solo shows featuring songs from right across his career. Driven by acoustic or electric guitar and with strong vocal melodies and sparse harmonica accompaniment, the songs range from haunting ballads, through classic power pop to outright rockers. A unique performer with a lot to say.
