"My name is Deb Suckling. And I swear if anyone had told me when I first started playing in loud bands 20 odd years ago that I would be finally releasing my own solo album at the age of 47 – I would have fell down a cattle grid laughing my guts out. I was considered too old when I wrote my first song at 23 and started playing in bands in Brisbane – coming from a background of growing up first in our food goldmine of good old Gatton and then the very big city of Toowoomba. But holy hell – moving to Brisbane and finding myself within a very short period of time singing in a band - Brindle and going on to do the crazy things we got to do – touring, recording, playing overseas, going on this wild adventure without much of a notch of musicality in my bones – well I didn’t expect that either. And then you can add on the 20 odd years that I found myself in the industry after being too old, too pregnant, too married, too female like - whatever to be played on the radio anymore – that ride has been just as unexpected. But that story is not to for here. This is about my music. The one thing I haven’t done though – is make my own album. Or to be honest – find my own voice and share my own stories. Because Jesus, my stories were the one thing I kept running away from. They certainly weren’t pretty. When I started playing music and writing I had lived through 20 odd years of trauma with my first sexual assault starting at 4 years old. I had lived through 7 years of my late teenage years in a violent relationship. And when I actually had my own kids and worked with hundreds of artists and helped tell their stories and make their albums – I finally realised that maybe I was good enough to make own. My debut album is called Worthy. It’s taken me what feels like a lifetime to feel Worthy. To feel good enough. This album tells my stories. I would never had made it without people like my lifechanging partner and guitar god Craig Spann, Jeff Lovejoy and Jason Millhouse twiddling knobs and bloody Sean Sennett harassing me for a few years telling me that I was good enough. The best thing is – I know I won’t and I can’t be broken if people dig it or not. Because it’s not about you or this rather insanely messed up industry we work in who should decide if we are to be good enough or if we aren’t good enough. That doesn’t mean I don’t have hugest respect for the best humans in this business. Because without them, this wouldn’t be possible. These songs and this album are for the people who have lived the same story as me and those who have lived a whole lot more. And trust me there are so many of us who have had our worthiness taken away from us through absoultuely no fault of our own. My name is Deb Suckling. And I am Worthy. The first single is called Awkward. We all know how that feels." Leaving some final words to mentor, friend and fellow artist Sean Sennett: “In 2021 Deb Suckling is standing where she was always meant to be … Centre stage. That’s where she belongs. With a powerhouse voice and a swag of new songs, Deb has the courage to lay her soul bare and sing her truth. “I’ve known Deb through her various bands Lucy Star Satellite and Brindle, but this journey as a solo artist sees her dragging her art into the ‘now’ and it has been damn exciting to witness her evolution. The new songs are primal and confronting. They do what good art should do - they provoke a reaction, they make you think. “This woman has soul. She has lived a life. She has scars to prove it. nd now - Deb is right where she should be - creating a noise and inviting us to listen. More power you Deb.”
