Dopamine Slot Machine is a psychedelic synthpop outfit broadcasting to outer space via Boorloo/Perth, Western Australia. The solo project of Boorloo-based musician and producer Mike Nutt (Myths, The High Learys), Dopamine Slot Machine began as a hastily-written EP of love songs sketched out during the height of the pandemic. It was an impulse purchase of an obscure 90s vocoder for robot-ifying vocals a couple years later however, that shifted these songs’ vibe from earnest to otherworldly, cementing the project’s sound. With a day job as a scientist designing new psychedelic drugs at the University of Western Australia, it is perhaps no surprise that Nutt is most comfortable making music under the psychedelic genre umbrella - with a retro-futuristic approach to sound design that channels the likes of Yellow Magic Orchestra, Daft Punk, MGMT and Air, this newest project delivers a lush, anachronistic take on the synthpop genre.
