“Whatever mess life throws you into, creativity helps find a way out.” If art is about communicating truth, let’s be honest. Katy Brownless failed both art and music in high school and has no formal qualifications. With that out of the way, she had another, more successful, attempt at stoking her inner artist in 2007. Her interest in art was rekindled with thoughts of using it as a therapeutic method of dealing with psych-ward blues – the kind you encounter when you find yourself medicated out of your mind in the seclusion room. She’s found humour in the harsh reality of her situation, developing an unhealthy obsession with birds along the way. In 2008, Katy was tutored on the finer points of trash-hoarding and stick-figure drawing at Mission Australia’s ‘Creative Youth Initiative’ program. She sold plenty of trash-turned-treasure at the end-of-year exhibition, demonstrating in the process there are more crazy people in Sydney than the public health system would have us believe.
