What does it mean to you to be Australian? This is the question I asked myself 2 years ago, when I began the project that would become Sapphire City, my debut full-length album. I started dropping things I was not. I stopped trying to sing in that pseudo-American accent that most singers subconsciously adopt. I thought about this land, my relationship with it, the source of my identity and lifeblood. But I also thought of all the old, tired stories of Australia. The larrikin. The true-blue mates of the bush, boiling billy in one white hand. What the hell is that to us now? Where are the stories of this Australia, now, that I relate to? I wanted to give something to that. To our current Australia. What we represent to ourselves and the world. Our relationship with our ancestry, white and black. How we take in, and harshly block, people arriving from other nations; our relationship with refugees. Things I frickin love about this place, like the sweet egalitarianism, the incredible
