Emmy Ryan offers a new kind of Australian folk-country informed by bluegrass, old time, and Irish traditions — honest, vulnerable, with eyes wide open. Her award-winning songs carry truth like a heartbeat — stories of love, loss, belonging, and the land that holds us. A modern day troubadour based between Naarm/Mebourne and Mpartnwe/Alice Springs, Emmy sings with fierce tenderness about what it means to find home, face history, and stay open-hearted in hard times. Rooted in the folk tradition of storytelling, her music lives at the meeting place of protest and poetry. Emmy’s music blends her passion for Australian, Appalachian, and Irish folk music with her jazz-informed sensibilities. Pairing deeply confessional lyrics with acoustic arrangements featuring Emmy’s soulful voice and mandolin playing, these songs and tunes offer something new, unique, and personal. A line can be drawn to Paul Kelly’s Australian bluegrass records and Missy Higgins’ conversational storytelling and laconic vocal delivery. Emmy’s debut full length album Unfold is slated for release in February 2027, and features a string band of brilliant players — Erin Heycox on fiddle, Lachlan Heycox on guitar and banjo, and Tasha Stevens on upright bass — all award winners in their own right, and was tracked by engineer Ryan Martin John of Cactus Cactus Sound live at Wizard Tone Studios in Tarndanya/Adelaide in April 2026. The album was made just as string band albums long to be made — no auto tune, no overdubs, just the magic, spontaneity, and delight of a group of friends in a circle around microphones, looking each other in the eye and sharing the joy and love of music. Emmy's songs and tunes from both her upcoming Album Unfold and her 2024 debut EP I Ain't So Blue weave exceptional musicianship with a voice that sits somewhere between a lullaby and a reckoning, reminding us that truth and beauty can still share the same bed.
