Etnik Elektrik is the brain-child of Nigel McLaughlin and Melinda Phillips who wanted to put together a sound that would appeal to folky audiences but also to a wider range of people who enjoy electronic music. Both of them had performed in a wide range of lineups covering everything from Big Band, to Indie Rock and Irish folk to Klezma, but neither had approached anything with an Electronica angle. The use of electronics means that we can encompass a broad range of sounds not normally accessible to an accoustic band. This includes things like Macedonian Gaidi (Bagpipes) played live via the Electronic Wind Instrument through to samples of Finnish Kulning or Cattle Calling songs played in the background - including 'a dying Bedouin' as one particular sample is fondly referred to.
