Good things rarely come easily, and Brisbane band Feuds in no exception, having formed slowly over several years and incarnations. In 2012 drummer Patrick Balfe began playing for songwriter Jeremy Hunter’s solo project. In 2015 several members departed, leaving the two to seek out guitarist Perry Walker and bassist Gavin Callaghan to fill their places. The chemistry was immediate and unmistakable, prompting the band to relaunch with the name Feuds, honoring the new members and the project’s newfound style. Feuds’ brand of heavy guitar rock sounds like a fusion of Foals and The Drones, if it were fronted by some angst-ridden lovechild of Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley. The music balances between spontaneous improvisation and carefully thought-out arrangements, whilst Hunter’s lyricism is a curious blend of personal experience, social commentary and complex emotional themes. The result is a whirlwind of riffs, licks, noise and melody, all resting upon an unbreakable backbone of groove.
