Geoff Kevin is the brand new collaborative project of Geoff Towner (El Mopa, Decoder Ring) and Kevin Purdy (Purdy, Tooth). The story of the incredible coupling of two Sydney creatives, Geoff Towner and Kevin Purdy, began in 2018, but individually they've both carved out influential and respected musical careers. Geoff with his many journeys into left-field rock and post-rock strategies, with ensembles including El Mopa and Decoder Ring in the 2000s and Kevin with his psyche rock & folk meets cut and paste soundtrack visions (Purdy, Tooth) and numerous other projects dating back to the 1970s. These two originally met in the late 90’s, when Geoff, with journalist hat on, interviewed the very groggy Purdy and Sir Robbo, from Tooth, for an ill-fated article. The two guys bumped into each other many times and in many ways over the next 20 years, always about music and always with a strong mutual respect. One day, during a period where Kevin felt a need to spread his wings and work in new ways, he chanced upon Geoff at his record store gig. Their conversation inspired Kevin to ask if they possibly could hook up to make music. The eventual answer was “hell yeah” and thus started a great musical collaboration. Geoff, a fine musician, had up his sleeve an outstanding ability to play a lot of instruments, well, as well as being a strong and individual vocalist and an A-grade songwriter and arranger. Kevin, meanwhile, was no slacker, as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, producer and a reasonable vocalist. Both had accumulated a healthy backlog of unreleased tunes and this was the perfect project to bring together their well-suited directions and ideas. The end result, Avoidance, an album drenched in a warm melancholy, is a rich and powerful collaborative musical journey that that draws a line from CAN and Robert Wyatt through to modern day sonic adventurers such as Grandaddy and Califone – all the while exploring the endless possibilities of composition and songcraft.
