There's all kinds of places you could start. Start with Brisbane, folk songs, a critically revered debut under the Carry Nation name. Start with several years as a Melbourne resident, honing a craft and performing alongside Darren Hanlon, Georgia Fair, Laura Jean, Washington, McKisko, Laura Imbruglia and Whitley. You could even start with an all-too-brief tenure as a member of Golden Arrow alongside collaborators such as Lisa Mitchell, Lanie Lane and Clare Bowditch. It wouldn't be a stretch to draw a line from any of these places, and to arrive at Jessie Warren's new work as 'halfshark' - but in reality, none of these things in isolation can actually prepare a listener for the leap forward that halfshark represents. All at once a triumphant culmination of her work to date and an attempt to evolve beyond it, this is an auteur come into her own at last, finally finding a way to convey ideas long-held and delicately tended to.
