Hologram Sam is Evan Jones (also of Malibu Spacey), a Melbourne/Naarm artist with an enduring love of the dense and mysterious guitar tunings of Joni Mitchell, the surreal lyrical worlds of the Grateful Dead and the three part harmonies of the Laurel Canyon scene. This isn't throwback music, though, sharing the same world as forward-looking modern folk and country artists like Jessica Pratt, Cut Worms and Leah Senior. Debut album, Hologram Samwich, is out now. This batch of Holo-tunes are all self-recorded, giving these introspective (or often only semi-autobiographical) songs a genuine fly-on-the-wall intimacy. You'll feel the smoke in the air of those bushfire summers, the salty spray of seaside hometowns, the loneliness of floating free in space - ideally with a smile and a sly tear waving hello from one eye.
