Hurb Jephasun is an enigmatic figure in Perth’s insular independent music scene. A veteran guitarist, vocalist and pianist, Hurb performs with a raw intensity, lack of pretention and scalding passion that would put many younger musicians to shame. In concert, he has drawn comparisons with the Man In Black, Johnny Cash. Hurb was reputedly a member of seminal Sydney cow-punk band Squelch and eighties soul rock group Rose Street Rhythm and Blues Revival Band. Hurb refuses to be drawn on his details of his musical past, except to hint at illicit substances, debauchery and other typical excesses of the rock and roll lifestyle. After a self-inflicted career hiatus, Hurb was reborn as a solo artist in 2007. His original folk/country/grunge material reflects his love of artists such as Sonic Youth and Neil Young, but retains an unremitting grasp on melody.
