“I am not a Nihilist” is one of the personalities of Brisbane songwriter Mark Zian. Mark grew up as a typical, working class, Australian boy. The son of immigrant parents, his father a telephone technician and his mother a, now unemployed, systems analyst. Mark was not an imaginative or creative child, focusing on the traditional subjects of Mathematics and English rather than art or music. Growing up Mark continued to walk his beige line, eventually embarking on a career in accountancy. However somewhere within this story another Mark was born. His music can best be described as fictionalised reality. Stories from his side of the coin, clouded by his own perception, these memories are so vivid, he is unsure whether they actually happened. A past loved one has described his music as “another romantic notion thrown into the fire” and Mark as “the bringer of misery and doom”. But his songs are not written to bring anything to anybody; they are just his way of dealing with his own
