Jiem are a contemporary quintet that explore the dynamic spectrum of jazz, both rhythmically and melodically with compositions by horn players Tessie Overmyer and Miles Rooney. They develop their sound throughout each performance from restrained and delicate interplay, grounded in their close musical connection, to high energy, complex virtuosic improvisations. Emerging out of Sydney’s exciting music scene, Jiem consists of Tessie Overmyer, Miles Rooney, Ryu Kodama, Harry Birch, and Matt Harris – all graduates of the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The unique personalities and stylistic qualities of each member form a synergetic ensemble that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Influenced by great Australian innovators such as Phil Slater, Simon Barker, Andrea Keller, Jonathan Zwartz, and Barney McAll - Jiem are marking their presence in an exciting new chapter of Australian Jazz.
