Kate Watts is a Melbourne-based power vocalist and songwriter crafting music at the intersection of soul and pop. Known for her emotive delivery and commanding stage presence, her voice carries both raw vulnerability and undeniable strength, drawing listeners into a deeply human and connected experience. Kate’s musical foundation was built on the road. In 2012, she founded and fronted blues and folk trio The Blue Ruins, performing over 500 shows and appearing at more than 30 festivals across Australia and the US, including Byron Bay Blues Festival, Memphis Folk Alliance and Airlie Beach Music Festival. These years shaped her as a live performer, grounding her artistry in storytelling, musicianship and genuine connection with an audience. Following her time with The Blue Ruins, Kate stepped into a new chapter as a solo artist, releasing her debut singles Goodbye and How Hard through Marshmallow Pavement Records. Both tracks were championed by Triple J, reached the AMRAP charts, and held top positions on Triple J Unearthed, marking her as an emerging voice in Australia’s independent music scene. In recent years, Kate has expanded her writing and vocal work through collaborations in the electronic space, working with producers across dance and drum and bass. These projects have seen her music reach global audiences and major industry figures, while continuing to refine her craft as a topliner and songwriter. Now, Kate returns to her roots with a renewed artistic vision. Her solo project is a bold evolution into soul driven pop, blending the emotional depth of her early influences with a contemporary edge. Her recent live work, including The Chocolate Factory Sessions, captures this transition — intimate, powerful performances that centre the voice, the story and the moment. Her upcoming album Prologue is the culmination of this journey. A deeply personal body of work, it explores themes of growth, self-discovery and emotional truth, carried by her unmistakable voice and a sound that is both timeless and modern. At the heart of Kate’s artistry is connection. Whether on a festival stage or in an intimate room, she creates space for audiences to feel, reflect and come home to themselves through music. As Triple J’s Dave Ruby Howe notes, “Been a minute since I heard new music from Kate but ooof that vocal still impacts powerfully.” And from renowned live performance coach Tom Jackson, “Easily one of the best singers I’ve ever worked with, a star.”
