Kweku Mainoo was born and brought up in Ghana. He then travelled to the UK for higher education in the 80s where he started to develop as an artist with an interest in the roots and rudimentary structures of music. His introduction to the wonderful world of the Kora and other traditional instruments like the Ngoni and the Ballaphone widened his repertoire.
