Des Miller had earworms running through his brain. Unrecorded tunes. “I needed to get all these songs out of my head,” says the chirpy Magnetic Heads songwriter, singer, some-time guitarist and brains trust. Miller’s Magnetic Heads project had lay dormant since 2012. Back then the five-piece group cherrypicked from Talking Heads, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Smiths. Enter Liam Judson, chief songwriter and production whiz of dream pop soul-mates Belles Will Ring. Together they holed up in Judson’s Sonic Funhouse home studio in bushy Blackheath near the top of the Blue Mountains. The result is Magnetic Heads’ debut album Moral Outage, with nods to The The, Devo and Gregor. Moral Outage is a bittersweet listen. “I’m so enamoured by the possibility of community, our capacity to assemble. It’s why we love theatre, live music, dancing. Despite my moments of despair, I’m a tragic optimist.”
