Melbourne songwriter Marc Deaz is stepping out on his own with a solo release. For the first time, the bedroom balladeering in his head is committed to record. Read on Red has been seven years in the making. There are tunes from when Deaz first picked up a guitar, ditties written during downtime for his other projects Grandstands and Teamwork, lyrics written overseas for shows in Japan and America. There are songs about, in his own words, “falling in love, falling out of love, birth, death, addiction, coming, going, and staying”. In late 2015, the planets aligned, and Marc Deaz was a musician with some spare time and an itch. Seven years of inspiration was channelled into a few weeks of solitary writing, late-night bedroom jams and DIY recording. It was enough for two volumes, but then, seven years is a long time. So Read On Red is a clearing-out, a purging, an emptying of the vaults. It’s a catalog of what’s come before and a marker for what’s next. It’s simple, gentle, unhurried
