Growing up on the mid north coast of NSW, Matilda Sutherland was engulfed by surf rock, folk, and 80s ballads under the influence of her parents. After moving to Melbourne in 2014, Matilda began her music career as a DJ in Melbourne’s electronic underground - obtaining recognition as an integral part of the local techno scene. After the onset of covid lockdowns in 2020, Matilda’s focus shifted. After receiving a beat-up old Yamaha from a friend, Matilda began to write. Her debut single, Lay Down - a rolling rock’n’roll track harking back to the 70s - was released to a sell-out audience at Melbourne’s Colour Club. Despite being a late comer to the world of ‘guitar music’, it feels like a return to her roots in country NSW. The smoke and mirrors of the club have dispersed, and all that’s left is Matilda, guitar in arm, with a song to sing for anyone lucky enough to hear.
