In this day and age of genre obsession and cross pollination of styles, in a time when music fans only like ‘melodic hardcore crossover’, or ‘hipster indie singer songwriter’ or some other such contrived classification, it’s comforting to know that Melbourne three piece band Mex’s Mayhem exist. But it’s not the paint by numbers rock that you’ve heard done to death for the last 60 years. It draws influence from Hendrix and the blues, and yet is forward thinking at the same time. It has a ‘salt of the earth’ aesthetic, but injects a number of other elements into the mix as well, from surf music to grunge, from country rock to Led Zeppelin style experimentation.
