“If you smoke, you’re broke” is just one of the messages being spread by a group of indigenous boys in the Midwest through the development of a hip hop song, which they have titled “Reach For Ur Goals”. Fourteen Year 11 students from the Midwest Football Academy in Geraldton spent six weeks working with well-known Hip Hop artist Scott Griffiths (MC Optamus; Downsyde) and Mat De Koning (WA Young Film Maker of the Year 2011) to write, record and film a Hip Hop song and film clip, which highlights healthy living and addresses tobacco smoking prevention among young people. The project was coordinated by the WACHS-Midwest Health Promotion team, the Midwest GP Network and the Midwest Football Academy through sponsorship by Healthway to promote the Heart Foundation’s Smarter Than Smoking message. The song has received lots of airplay locally, and some students have gone on to pen heaps more lyrics.
