Michael Dodds had a taste early on of what stardom might be like when the cover band he played keyboards in (and sang the high songs for) landed a residency gig at the hottest nightspot in his then hometown of Durban, South Africa. Being the first band in town to cover bands such as INXS and Midnight Oil, revelers soon queued down the street to get in to see "Beats Me" as they were then called. The name finally being chosen in response to their first fan, his younger brother's frequent eager asking during rehearsals what they were going to call themselves. The next 6 months were spent partying at the hottest clubs in town after gigs, escaping groupies and doing their best to avoid the police as "Beats Me" comprised two Indian and two white members resulting in police harassment of the band members due to the then apartheid state's policy of intimidating inter-racial association. Michael eventually decided to leave the band and the oppressive government regime for the UK. Michael
