What does Mystic Park’s debut album Silver Lining sound like? “It’s nothing like anything else that’s out there right now,” says its creator Shann Lions, best known as the frontman for Bendigo roots rockers Four Lions. “Its focus is synth-heavy and sporadic. The production and ideas around instrumentation are what differentiates this record.” Silver Lining is “the story of my life over a six-month period”, according to Lions, set against a cosmic musical backdrop that melds art rock with chillout and alt-country – but then takes it in a completely different and unexpected direction. These songs were inspired by artists as diverse as The Cure, War On Drugs, Neil Young, and Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks soundtrack), according to Lions, while the beats were influenced by Jim White (Dirty Three) and RZA (Wu-Tang Clan). Lions wrote all the songs, played most of the instruments, and co-produced the album with Finn Keane at renowned Melbourne studio Head Gap. Silver Lining will be released on June 1 on Lions’ own Verse Chorus Verse label. It will be followed by a run of theatrical, visual-heavy live shows throughout Victoria.
