Born in Zimbabwe, Africa, Mzwetwo moved to New Zealand as a refugee at the age of 6. Mz grew up watching his mother make ends meet in order to create new beginnings in a new country with a new language. He pinpoints his mothers’ strength and courage as the driving force behind his bravery and unique brand of music. When Mzwetwo first started going to school in New Zealand, he and his sister were amongst the few black kids in attendance. This allowed his introduction to music to be via the Rock artists his primary school friends were listening to. It wasn’t until later when Mzwetwo started watching music tv that his fascination with Hip-Hop began; “It was like finally seeing a cool grown up version of myself! And because they looked like me, I felt like I could do it.” He explains. So throughout his teenage and high school years, Mzwetwo studied both Hip-Hop and Rock N Roll with the intention of creating a sound that blends both sonic worlds and reflects his upbringing.
