Formed as a one-off project, Great Western was recorded by the band with Japanese producer, Aiko Yakumoto in his home studio. The four members decided to jam in a rehearsal space for a night and wrote a song then found a producer the next day who wanted to record it for them. Under Yakumoto's direction, the guitar parts were recorded using Squire guitars. Drums, bass and vocals were to be done within one take each with time left for extra overdubs including tambourine and trumpet.
