Great friends and collaborators Nick Calligeros and Nick Henderson present: ‘I Wonder’ - a collection of five ambient and post-rock inspired tracks brimming with reflection and catharsis. Nick Calligeros and Nick Henderson might both be best known as a trumpeter and bassist, respectively, but both musicians have been tinkering with electronics for the greater part of their professional life, with both Nick's having released numerous solo electronic works over the years and integrating electronics into their live performances. Further, they have long shared a love of emotive ambient music, swapping records and links over the years including the likes of Jon Hopkins, Tim Hecker, Ben Frost and Julianna Barwick - all who have inspired this latest release. The album and track titles reflect the two Nick's shared practice in meditation. In a time where attention is being increasingly commodified, and contemplative practice seems to be more and more at odds with the modern world, these five tracks have been crafted to evoke a sense of awe for all things ineffable and grand. The title track in particular elicits the stillness and vastness of space, while tracks 2 to 5 paint a variety of moods and experiences encountered throughout one's contemplative practice. Although this EP has not been crafted specifically for meditation, the hope is these tracks evoke a sense of awe and contemplation. While Calligeros’s electronic aesthetic focuses on manipulating found sounds and field recordings, Nick Henderson electronic practice utilises an array of synths and drones. Their respective aesthetics collide in this EP, with Calligeros’ off-kilter loops and samples forming an organic, moody foundation for Henderson’s evocative synth lines. This EP emerged from four improvised sessions between June and December 2024 at Henderson’s studio. The jams were organised to experiment with new electronic music gear together. Each jam featured variations in instrumentation and setups. From the multiple hours of audio, five moments were edited into tracks, then collectively mixed and mastered by the two musicians. Nick and Nick share a musical history dating back 13 years to their meeting while studying jazz performance at the Sydney Conservatorium together. Since then they have been close friends and musical collaborators, with Henderson co-producing and mixing Calligeros’ SOFT SPOT album, and Calligeros playing on multiple recordings of Henderson’s Little Clouds project.
